Ermita del Conde

Ermita del Conde is situated outside Coruña del Conde, a village just 5km outside the boundary of the Ribera del Duero D.O. Coruña del Conde claims to be the venue for the first human flight by air pioneer Diego Marin Aguilera in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Known as the father of aviation in Spain, there is a rather incongruous monument dedicated to him just outside the winery. The vineyards are in the hills, at a cooler 900m above sea level, allowing a slow, even ripening and giving the wines more finesse and bright fruit. In addition, there are parcels of 100 year old Tempranillo vines, which make the wine extra special. It is also a resource that would not available in Ribera del Duero for a new winery.  Jaime Suarez, of Quinola, has been consulting with Ermita del Conde since 2009 and no expense or effort has been spared in the winery to produce wines of the highest quality. Ermita del Conde is a full-bodied blend of old vine Tempranillo with a small proportion of Merlot. It displays the concentration of the old vines, ripe fruit, impeccable balance and, because it is made in a restrained, elegant style, it has a wonderful drinkability. This is an estate to watch as the wines keep improving under Jaime’s direction vintage after vintage. We are looking forward to showing the 2008 when it is released later this year.

2008 Viña Sulpicia Tinto

"The winery was only built five years ago, but this wine is produced from old vines planted at an altitude of 900m. The restrained use of oak helps bind it all together, resulting in a fresh, juicy wine, with red and dark fruits, fine tannins, and a scattering of spice" Decanter, Weekday wines, July 2011
