Carlos and Rodrigo Fernandez now run this family owned domain crammed into a 15-century Jewish merchant’s house in the oldest and highest part of the village of Labastida. Both are passionate about their vineyards and the work they undertake in them, they are equally engaging on the subject of how they make their wine, which in itself is no mean feat as they operate on eight different levels.
These wines are the antithesis of traditional Rioja, with each wine having a clearly defined personality that may or may not fit into Rioja’s rigid grading system. The more ‘traditionally ‘made tinto Crianza and blanco are produced using methods that might be considered to be the most normal; the red being packed with fruit and spicy oak, but always defined by a mineral core; and the white being a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanco and Malvasia, fermented and aged in 50% new and 50% second and third year 225 litre barrels. The Tierra Fidel wines are made in homage to the brother’s father, Fidel. The red is a 50% split between Graciano and Garnacha grown in the very finest spot nearest the village. The wine is fermented in open topped American and French barrels prior to 10 months aging in barrels. The white is an amazing blend of seven varieties that are co fermented and aged in one demi-muid for as long as it takes to meld. This is a beautiful wine; poised, elegant and complex and as understated and intriguing as one would ever hope to find a white wine to be.
